I flew from Phu Quoc to Ho Chi Minh – still called Saigon by so many people – and arrived in a heavy shower. I took a taxi to district 1, you can also take a bus, Line 109, but since it was pouring rain, I wanted to get to my hostel as fast as possible. District 1 is the most popular area with a lot of hostels and I stayed in the Blue River Hotel, which I can highly recommend. After freshening up, I met Ely from Texas in the lobby. We had a chat for a bit and decided then that we’ll  go and have a coffee, and I love Vietnamese coffee! Ely was one of the best people I met on my Vietnam trip and we’re still friends yay!

Von Phu Quoc bin ich nach Ho Chi Minh geflogen und kam direkt in einen Wolkenbruch. Ich nahm ein Taxi zum Distrikt 1, man kann auch einen Bus nehmen, Linie 109, aber da es so geschüttet hatte, wollte ich so schnell wie möglich in mein Hostel. Distrikt 1 ist die beliebteste Gegend mit den meisten Hostels und ich schlief im Blue River Hotel, das ich auch nur empfehlen kann. Nachdem ich mich frisch gemacht hatte, traf ich Ely aus Texas in der Lobby. Wir unterhielten uns kurz und beschlossen dann Kaffee trinken zu gehen, und ich liebe vietnamesischen Kaffee! Ely ist eine der besten Menschen, die ich in Vietnam getroffen habe. Und wir sind immer noch befreundet yay!

In the evening we went to the Central Post Office, influenced by french architecture, definitely worth a visit! After that we visited the old Saigon City Hall and especially the huge walking space in front of it, where the life rages especially in the evenings.

Abends sind wir zum Central Post Office gegangen, sehr beeinflusst von französischer Architektur, definitiv einen Besuch wert! Danach haben wir uns außerdem noch die alte Saigon City Hall angeschaut und auch den riesigen Platz davor, auf dem gerade abends das Leben tobt.

Walking around Ho Chi Minh also means taking care! First off, there are a lot of scooters, so crossing the streets is not easy at all. I figured that pointing on the drivers while crossing the streets, and showing that you want them to stop, helps. As well don’t start to hesitate once you’ve started walking,  the more you stop and hesitate, the more you will confuse the drivers. The other thing you have to be aware of are handbag thieves. Always wear your bags crosswise, not on just one side. Seriously. There is a high chance that a person on a scooter will drive by, take it and will be gone before you even realized and shout “Hey!”. 

In Ho-Chi-Minh herumzulaufen bedeutet auch, dass ihr aufpassen müsst! Zu aller erst gibt es viele Roller, also ist es nicht leicht, die Straßen zu überqueren. Ich habe festgestellt,  dass das Zeigen auf die Fahrer, wenn man die Straßen überquert und somit zeigt,  dass man sie meint, hilft. Fangt auch nicht an, los zu laufen und auf einmal zögernd stehen zu bleiben, denn das verwirrt die Fahrer nur.  Die anderen Sachen, die ihr beachten müsst sind,  Handtaschen Diebe. Tragt eure Taschen immer quer über euren  Körper, nicht nur auf einer Seite. Ernsthaft. Es besteht eine hohe Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass eine Person auf einem Roller vorbeifährt, sie greift und weg ist, bevor ihr es überhaupt merkt und “Hey!” rufen könnt.

Let us talk about Shopping 🙂 The best place to do that is the Ben Thanh Market in district 1. You can buy everything there, clothes, handbags, souvenirs and eat a lot as well! You can easily improve your negotiation skills there haha!

Lasst uns über’s Einkaufen sprechen 🙂 Der beste Ort dafür ist der Ben Thanh Markt im Distrikt 1. Ihr könnt dort alles kaufen, Kleidung, Handtaschen, Souvenirs und außerdem dort auch essen! Außerdem könnt Ihr euer Verhandlungsgeschick verbessern haha!

On the next day Ely, Gal (who was also sleeping in the same dorm like I did) and me wanted to visit a nice lily garden: We went to the bus stop Hàm Nghi, in district 1  and from there we took the line 44. You have to stop at Binh Quoi Village. The journey takes around 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. Once you’re there, it‘s only a few meters to the garden, which is for free. It was not a single tourist there and so it was the perfect place to escape the hectic Ho Chi Minh.

Am nächsten Tag wollten Ely, Gal (die in auch in meinem Hostel Zimmer schlief) und ich zum Lilien Garten: Wir liefen zu der Bushaltestelle Hàm Nghi,  in Distrikt 1 und von dort nahmen wir die den Bus Linie 44. Ihr müsst bis zur Binh Quoi Village fahren. Die Fahrt dauert je nach Verkehr 20-30 Minuten. Dort angekommen, sind es nur noch ein paar Meter bis zu dem Garten, der kostenlos ist. Es war nicht ein einziger Tourist dort und so war es der perfekte Ort, um mal dem hektischen Ho Chi Minh zu entfliehen.

For me the best restaurant where I had food in Ho Chi Minh was definitely Baba’s Kitchen, also in district 1. The best Indian food, really delicious Chai and great staff! babaskitchen.in

For the next day I decided to do a day trip with Kim Travels to the Mekong Delta due to the short time I had on my whole trip and was disappointed. I don‘t want to blame the whole thing on the tour company Kim Travels – the guide was super nice and spoke great English – but the tour was more like a promotional trip. We started in the morning by taking a bus to Mekong and arrived after two hours. There, we changed to a bigger boat and drove to the little “village” that was supposed to show the authentic life of the people in the Mekong Delta. Well, it’s more of a touristy village where they sell things.

Für den nächsten Tag hatte ich mich aufgrund der knappen Zeit, die ich auf meiner Reise hatte, für eine Tagestour mit Kim Travels in den Mekong Delta entschieden und wurde enttäuscht. Ich will gar nicht sagen, dass es unbedingt etwas mit Kim Travels zu tun hatte – der Guide war super nett und sprach tolles Englisch – aber die Tour ähnelte eher einer Kaffeefahrt. Wir starteten morgens mit dem Bus in Richtung Mekong und kamen nach 2 Stunden an. Dort wechselten wir auf ein größeres Boot und fuhren dann in das kleine „Dorf“, das das Leben der Menschen im Mekong zeigen sollte. Dabei handelt es sich eher um ein extra für Touristen angelegtes Dorf, in dem Sachen verkauft werden.

They didn’t show us how to make honey as described in the booklet, but just a honeycomb instead and after that, people could try the tea, which of course you could buy afterwards. We then went to a place where there was traditional singing. Several groups were sitting at this place; each group had their own singers, so you can imagine how much you actually heard of the singers. Afterwards, the different processes of making candies from coconuts were shown. It was quite interesting, but it’s not really my thing standing with several people around a diligent woman while explaining what she’s doing while the next group is coming and pushing. You could buy the candies afterwards as well.

Uns wurde nicht, wie in der Broschüre beschrieben, gezeigt wie man dort Honig herstellt, sondern lediglich eine Bienenwabe und dann gab es eine Kostprobe des Tees, den man dann natürlich auch kaufen konnte. Weiter ging es zu einem Ort, an dem es traditionellen Gesang gab. Mehrere Gruppen saßen an diesem Ort, jede Gruppe bekam Gesangseinlagen, man kann sich also vorstellen, wie viel man tatsächlich von dem Gesang mitbekommen hat. Danach wurden die verschiedenen Prozesse gezeigt, wie man Bonbons aus Kokosnüssen herstellt. Das war auch recht interessant, aber es ist einfach nicht mein Ding, mit mehreren Leuten um eine fleißig arbeitende Frau zu stehen, während erklärt wird, was sie macht, während die nächste Gruppe schon kommt und sich dazu drängt. Die Bonbons konnte man anschließend natürlich kaufen.

The best part, and what I was looking forward to the most, was the rowing boat ride, but this ride took only 10 minutes. We then came to a big place where we had lunch, and really the worst thing happened there. Crocodiles, snakes, frogs and many other animals were kept under unworthy conditions, so you were able to watch them and I think you probably could eat crocodile meat as well. In the prospect it said that we would have the chance to explore the area by bicycle. However, we were only able to drive in the courtyard a few laps. Back then we went to a smaller, motorized boat and changed then to a larger one. Then we went back to the bus and back to Ho Chi Minh. The tour had many very good reviews on Tripadvisor, but also some that described exactly what I’ve just told you. I should have listened to it. I would definitely go to the Mekong Delta on my own next time, stay there and have more time to explore it, because I can really not recommend such a day trip. Mekong Delta is beautiful though and definitely worth a visit!!

Der beste Teil, und worauf ich mich am meisten gefreut hatte, war die Fahrt mit den Ruderbooten, diese Fahrt dauerte allerdings gerade mal 10 Minuten. Anschließend kamen wir zu einem großen Platz, an dem wir Mittagessen hatten, und dort fand wirklich das schlimmste statt. Krokodile, Schlangen, Frösche und viele andere Tiere wurden unter unwürdigen Bedingungen gehalten, damit man sie sich anschauen konnte und ich glaube dort konnte man auch Krokodilfleisch essen. Außerdem sollte es nach dem Mittagessen die Möglichkeit geben, mit dem Fahrrad die Gegend zu erkunden. Allerdings konnte man dort quasi nur im Hof ein paar Runden fahren. Zurück ging es dann auf ein kleineres, motorisiertes Boot und dann auf ein größeres. Dann ging es wieder in den Bus und zurück nach Ho Chi Minh. Die Tour hatte bei Tripadvisor viele sehr gute Bewertungen, aber auch einige, die genau das beschrieben, was ich gerade beschrieben habe. Ich hätte darauf hören sollen. Ich würde beim nächsten Mal definitiv selbst ins Mekong Delta fahren, dort auch übernachten und mir mehr Zeit nehmen; denn so eine Tagestour ist wirklich nicht empfehlenswert. Das Mekong Delta ist aber trotzdem echt schön und unbedingt einen Besuch wert!

On our last night we went to the Bitexco Financial Tower, it is the tallest building in Ho Chi Minh. To get to the 49th floor on the viewing deck called Saigon Skydeck, you have to pay an entrance fee of 200,000 VND. However, we went a bit higher to the 52nd floor and sat down in the bar. Admission is free, but every person has to drink there, the prices start from 100,000 VND. There was live music from a band, and the view was really amazing!

An unserem letzten Abend waren wir auf dem Bitexco Financial Tower, es ist das höchste Gebäude in Ho Chi Minh. Damit man in den 49. Stock auf die Aussichtsetage Saigon Skydeck kommt, muss man einen Eintrittspreis von 200.000 VND zahlen. Wir sind allerdings noch ein paar  höher, in die 52. Etage gefahren und haben uns in die Bar gesetzt. Der Eintritt ist frei, allerdings muss jede Person dort etwas trinken, die Preise gehen auch ab 100.000 VND los.  Es gab Live-Musik von einer Band, und die Aussicht war wirklich unglaublich!

On the next day I took a bus to Mui Ne (if you want to go by bus on the same day, go to the ticket counter right after breakfast, otherwise you may not get a ticket for the time you want to leave, ‘cause it might be already full). The bus was so cool, you know they have these sleeper busses, where you can really lie down while being on the bus, so comfy! I said goodbye to my new friends and was sad to leave, but also looking forward to my upcoming adventures!

Am nächsten Tag bin ich mit dem Bus nach Mui Ne gefahren (wenn ihr noch am selben Tag fahren wollt, dann geht direkt nach dem Frühstück zum Ticket Schalter, sonst kriegt ihr eventuell kein Ticket mehr für eure gewünschte Zeit, da der Bus voll sein könnte).  Der Bus war so cool, denn in Vietnam gibt es diese Sleeper-Busse, in denen man tatsächlich liegen kann, so bequem! Ich verabschiedete mich von meinen neuen Freunden und war auch traurig, abzureisen, aber auch gespannt, auf meine noch bevorstehenden Abenteuer!
