Also on the island of Java, close to the town Garut, is the Gunung (Indonesian “mountain”) Papandayan. Papandayan is a 2665 meter high stratovolcano with several peaks and craters. In between lies the depression Alun-Alun, a devastated plateau with several blast craters and erosion gullies in which acidic thermal waters form streams.
Ebenfalls auf der Insel Java, in der Näher der Stadt Garut, befindet sich der Gunung (indonesisch “Berg”) Papandayan. Papandayan ist ein 2665 Meter hoher Schichtvulkan mit mehreren Gipfeln und Kratern. Dazwischen liegt die Depression Alun-Alun, es handelt sich um eine verwüstete Hochebene mit mehreren Explosionskratern und Erosionsschluchten, in denen saures Thermalwasser Bächer bildet.
The depression was caused by a large volcanic eruption in 1772. As a result of the eruption, the northeast flank of the volcano slipped off. The massive debris avalanche destroyed 40 villages and killed about 3,000 people.
Die Depression entstand bei einem großen Vulkanausbruch im Jahr 1772. Aufgrund der Eruption rutschte die Nordostflanke des Vulkans ab und verursachte eine gewaltige Schuttlawine und zerstörte 40 Dörfer und tötete ca. 3.000 Menschen.
Close to the Papandayan there is a large parking lot with a simple tourist station, as it’s customary for Indonesia. There, young men offer themselves as guides to the fumaroles and craters. You should definitely take a guide, because then you can explore off the beaten track the truly volcanic attractions.
In der Nähe vom Papandayan befindet sich ein großer Parkplatz mit einer simplen Touristenstation, wie man sie oft in Indonesien finden kann. Dort bieten sich junge Männer als Guides zu den Fumarolen und Kratern an. Ihr solltet definitiv einen Guide nehmen, denn dann kann man abseits der Pfade die wirklich vulkanischen Attraktionen bewundern.
Nehmt einen Schal oder etwas dergleichen mit, um euren Mund zu schützen. Schwefel riecht wirklich schlimm!
