Stone Town is the oldest district of Zanzibar City and absolutely worth a visit. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage since 2000, one wonders in many places where the funding for preservation and redevelopment flows. Buildings such as the “House of Wonders”, the first building “full of wonders”, such as the first elevator, electricity and running water throughout East Africa, could be a great attraction for many tourists, but unfortunately the house suffers from the missing restoration.
Stone Town ist das älteste Viertel von Sansibar-Stadt und absolut einen Besuch wert. Obwohl Stone Town seit 2000 UNESCO Weltkulturerbe ist, fragt man sich an vielen Stellen, wo die Fördergelder zum Erhalt und Sanierung hinfließen. Gebäude wie beispielsweise das “House of wonders”, das erste Gebäude “voller Wunder”, wie dem ersten Fahrstuhl, Elektrizität und fließend Wasser in ganz Ostafrika, könnte eine tolle Attraktion für viele Touristen sein, aber leider leidet das Haus sehr unter der fehlenden Restaurierung.
The Anglican Cathedral was built in 1873-1880 by David Livingstone and the British Bishop Edward Steere and was built on the former slave market. David Livingstone was so appalled by the enslavement in Zanzibar that he exerted political pressure on the Sultan. In 1873, slavery was finally abolished. The altar of the Anglican Church is build on the place where the tree was where the slaves used to be chained.
Die Anglikanische Kathedrale wurde 1873-1880 von David Livingstone und dem britischen Bischof Edward Steere gebaut und auf dem früheren Sklavenmarkt errichtet. David Livingstone war so entsetzt von der von anherrschenden Sklaverei in Zanzibar, dass er politischen Druck auf den damaligen Sultan ausübte. 1873 wurde die Sklaverei entgültig abgeschafft. Der Altar der Anglikanischen Kirche steht an der Stelle des Baumes, an dem früher die Sklaven angekettet waren.
The cells in the basement vaults in the building next door can also be visited. Even a short stay is very depressing, the air is stuffy, the rooms small and dark. One can not even imagine how the people felt being locked-in in that place. Especially when at high tide also the seawater ingressed through the small window. The people weren’t able to stand upright nor lie down and had to wait in the narrowness and dark to be sold and shipped.
Die Zellen in den Kellergewölben in dem Gebäude nebenan kann man ebenfalls besichtigen. Schon ein nur kurzer Aufenthalt ist sehr bedrückend, die Luft ist stickig, die Räume klein und dunkel. Man möchte sich gar nicht vorstellen, wie es den Menschen dort erging. Besonders, wenn bei Flut auch noch das Meerwasser durch das kleine Fenster drang. Die Menschen konnten nicht aufrecht stehen, aber auch nicht liegen und mussten in der Enge und Dunkelheit darauf warten, verkauft und verschifft zu werden.
Very moving is also the monument of Clara Sornas from the year 1998. The faces and facial expressions of the depicted persons are very detailed and you can almost feel their suffer. The chains with which they are tied are still original chains.
Sehr bewegend ist ebenfalls das Denkmal von Clara Sornas aus dem Jahre 1998. Die Gesichter und Mimik der dargestellten Personen sind sehr detailgetreu und ihr Leiden kann man ihnen förmlich ansehen. Die Ketten, an denen sie gefesselt sind, stammen noch aus der damaligen Zeit.
I would definitely recommend to do a city tour. It was off-season when I was in Zanzibar, so I only had to pay 10 Euros plus tips, and my guide Suleyman showed me the whole city, explained me among other things the interesting meaning of the doors of Stone Town and showed me a delicious restaurants, where the locals like to eat.
Ich würde definitiv empfehlen, eine City Tour zu machen. Es war Nebensaison als ich in Sansibar war, demnach musste ich nur 10 Euro plus Trinkgeld zahlen und dafür zeigte mir mein Guide Suleyman die ganze Stadt, erklärte mir u.a. die interessante Bedeutung der Türen von Stone Town und zeigte mir ein leckeres Lokal, in dem die Einheimischen gerne essen.
Throughout the city you can notice the special East African, Persian, Arabian and European influence. These cultures got mixed up and that’s how the multifaceted Swahili culture developed. We also visited the Darajani Market and the market hall on Creek Road. There are fruits, vegetables, spices, fish and meat. The smell is not for sensitive noses, but worth a visit in any case.
Wir besuchten außerdem den Darajani Markt und die Markthalle an der Creek Road. Dort gibt es Obst, Gemüse, Gewürze, Fisch und Fleisch. Der Geruch ist nichts für zarte Nasen, ein Besuch lohnt sich aber auf alle Fälle. In der ganzen Stadt merkt man den besonderen ostafrikanischen, persischen, arabischen und europäischen Einfluss, diese Kulturen haben sich vermischt und so entstand die facettenreiche Swahili-Kultur.
I spent the nights in the suite of Beyt Al Salaam and loved it. First and foremost, there was a co-worker who had the most amazing and heartfelt smile I’ve seen in a long time. I just had to laugh and grin every time I saw him. But also the rooms were just a dream. Traditional, in proper Swahili style. Ich verbrachte die Nächte in der Suite vom Beyt Al Salaam und war begeistert. Dort arbeitete einen Mitarbeiter, der das tollste und herzlichste Lächeln hatte, das ich seit langer Zeit gesehen habe. Ich musste einfach lachen und grinsen, jedes Mal wenn ich ihn gesehen habe. Aber auch die Zimmer waren ein Traum. Traditionell gehalten, ganz im Swahili Stil. We did a day trip to Prison Island – Changuu. We simply went to the harbour and took a boat, the earlier you go, the more you have the place for yourself. Cangguu has a beautiful beach and is famous for the giant tortoises and the old prison. I didn’t visit the prison, but the giant tortoises. I’m not pretty sure what to think about it. I’m not a biologist but I have the feeling that the tortoises need more space and do not live in proper conditions. It was fascinating though seeing these beautiful animals who originally came from the Seychelles – the oldest one 197 years old.
Wir machten einen Tagesausflug nach Prison Island – Changuu. Wir gingen einfach zum Hafen und nahmen ein Boot, je früher man fährt, desto größer ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass man den Ort für sich alleine hat. Cangguu hat einen unglaublich schönen Strand und ist berühmt für die Riesenschildkröten und das alte Gefängnis. Ich habe das Gefängnis nicht besucht, sondern nur die Riesenschildkröten. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, was ich davon halten soll. Ich bin keine Biologin, aber ich habe das Gefühl, dass die Schildkröten mehr Platz brauchen und nicht unter den richtigen Bedingungen leben. Es war dennoch faszinierend, diese wunderschönen Tiere zu sehen, die ursprünglich von den Seychellen stammten – die älteste ist 197 Jahre alt.
