I landed in Ho Chi Minh with the first direct flight of my life, and then I realized again that you should never plan less than 2 1/2 hours for the transfer. I had to wait for my luggage for ages and then had to queue at the check in counter. It was close, but finally I got on board and landed in Phu Quoq. I took a taxi to Long Beach (about 100,000 Dong), where I checked into the BE HOME HOSTEL, which was really great. Started my trip, I had a single room, which I often do for the first night to calm down and to sleep properly (Jetlag and so on: D) Shortly thereafter, I went straight to the beach, feeling like I was almost alone there. The tourists, especially the Vietnamese, who like to spend their holidays on the island, only go into the water from about 3 to 4pm to escape the midday sun. Well more beach for me then 😀 Long Beach has a public access, which was close to the Be Home Hostel. However, if you want to live right on the beach, you have to invest a bit more. Oh and the sunsets are beautiful, as well. The next day I literally did the same: sleep long, having breakfast, relaxing, reading and sleeping (and taking pictures) on the beach, eating and dinner. A perfect place to have dinner is the Night Market, you should definitely go and check it out 😉

Ich landete in Ho Chi Minh mit dem ersten Direktflug meines Lebens, und dort ist mir wieder bewusst geworden, dass man niemals weniger als 2 1/2 Stunden für den Umstieg einplanen sollte. Ich musste Ewigkeiten auf mein Gepäck warten und musste dann durch lange Schlangen am Check In Schalter. Es wurde knapp, aber schließlich konnte ich an Board gehen und landete kurz darauf in Phu Quoq. Ich nahm ein Taxi Richtung Long Beach (ca. 100,000 Dong), dort checkte ich ins BE HOME HOSTEL ein, was echt toll war. Ich hatte erstmal ein Einzelzimmer, was ich für die erste Nacht häufig mache, um runterzukommen und um richtig auszuschlafen (Jetlag und so 😀 ) Kurz darauf ging ich direkt zum Strand, und hatte das Gefühl, dass ich fast alleine dort war. Die Touristen, insbesondere die vietnamesischen, die gerne auf der Insel Urlaub machen, gehen erst ab ca 15/16 Uhr ins Wasser, um der Mittagssonne zu entgehen. Bedeutete mehr Strand für mich :D. Zum Long Beach gibt es einen öffentlichen Zugang, der in der Nähe vom Be Home Hostel war. Wer allerdings direkt am Strand wohnen möchte, muss etwas mehr investieren. Ach und die Sonnenuntergänge sind auch echt schön. Den nächsten Tag verbrachte ich genauso: Ausschlafen, Frühstücken, am Strand liegen, lesen und schlafen (und Fotos machen) und Abendessen. Ein perfekter Ort für das Abendessen ist auf alle Fälle der Nachtmarkt, ihr solltet unbedingt mal vorbei schauen 😉

On the next day I wanted to go to White Beach, which was in the East and from which I had heard a lot of good things. When I arrived there after about 30 minutes, I found a really nice place, wanted to take pictures and realized that I had left my SD card in my room… typical me! Unfortunately I have to say that the beach is very touristy. Many Vietnamese tourists, unfortunately a lot of rubbish and right behind me, a guy in the restaurant, kept on singing bad karaoke songs. But, there is a water swing and luckily I had my cellphone with me, so this photo could be taken with the help of a Vietnamese tourist group. It was still a nice day, but I had hoped for more and was a bit dissapointed. 

Am nächsten Tag wollte ich zum White Beach, der im Osten lag und von dem ich viel gehört hatte. Als ich dort nach ca. 30 min ankam, fand ich auch eine echt schöne Stelle, wollte Fotos machen und stellte fest, dass ich  meine SD Karte im Zimmer hatte liegen lassen…typisch ich! Ich muss aber leider auch sagen, dass der Strand sehr touristisch ist. Viele vietnamesischen Touristen, leider auch nicht wenig Müll und hinter mir im Restaurant sang jemand sehr schief Karaoke. Aber, dort gibt es eine Wasserschaukel und da ich zum Glück mein Handy mithatte, konnte mithilfe einer vietnamesischen Touristen Gruppe dieses Foto entstehen. Es war trotzdem ein schöner Tag, aber ich hatte mir mehr von dem Strand erhofft.

On the next morning I went on a trekking tour with some of the hostel’s staff and friends. We started at 8 o’clock in the morning, had another iced coffee and started hiking. Arthur, who natively is from Taiwan, living on Phu Quoc and who has an ice cream shop there (more later), has taken this path to the viewpoint once before. We walked through nature, always upward and it was so exhausting! The high humidity didn’t make it any better, but with enough breaks, it worked out for us. When we arrived at the top, we had a wonderful view and relaxed. We had brought things to make coffee and brought also fresh fruits, so we had a perfect little lunch. We talked about the different countries, similarities, differences and I think that this moment was very special. When we arrived back down, which wasn’t so easy because you really had to watch your step, we made a short break and then went back on the scooters straight to a waterfall. The waterfall would have been really nice if the Vietnamese families, who come there for a picnic, would not leave all their trash there. The waterfall was so dirty with plasticine, food, beer cans, that the members of our group were so ashamed of their compatriots that they started to tidy up. I will never understand people treating nature like this.

Am nächsten Morgen fuhr ich mit einigen Mitarbeitern des Hostels und deren Freunden auf eine Trekking Tour. Wir starteten um 8 Uhr morgens, hatten noch einen Eiskaffee und wanderten los. Arthur, der aus Taiwan kommt aber auf Phu Quoc lebt, und dort einen Eisladen hat (später mehr), ist diesen Weg schon einmal zum Aussichtspunkt getrekkt. Wir wanderten durch die Natur, immer aufwärts und es war so anstrengend! Die hohe Luftfeuchtigkeit machts es wirklich nicht einfacher, aber mit genügend Pausen ging es dann auch. Als wir oben ankamen, hatten wir eine wundervolle Aussicht und machten es uns erstmal bequem. Wir hatten etwas zum Kaffee machen mitgenommen und frisches Obst, und so hatten wir erstmal ein kleines Mittagessen. Wir unterhielten uns über die verschiedenen Länder, Gemeinsamkeiten, Unterschiede und ich fand, dass dieser Moment ganz besonders war. Als wir wieder unten angekommen waren, was auch nicht so einfach war, denn man musste wirklich gucken, wo man hintritt, machten wir vollgeschwitzt eine kurze Pause und dann ging es wieder weiter auf die Scooter zu einem Wasserfall. Der Wasserfall wäre auch wirklich schön gewesen, wenn die vietnamesischen Familien, die dort zum picknicken herkommen, nicht ihren ganzen Müll liegen lassen würden. Der Wasserfall war so verdreckt mit Plastik, Essen und Bierdosen, dass sich die anderen sich für ihre Landsleute regelrecht geschämt haben und erst einmal fingen, etwas aufzuräumen. Mich macht so ein Umgang mit der Natur immer sprachlos.

Then we had dinner together in a restaurant, and later we visited Arthur’s ice cream shop and I can tell you, it’s one of the best ice creams I’ve ever had, so be sure to drop by! The next morning a taxi took me to the airport and from there I took a plane to Ho Chi Minh. Things I would have loved to do on Phu Quoq would have been seeing the Sea Stars in the north. It’s best to go there when the tide is low, so do some research before. I’ve heard they’re really great!

Am nächsten Morgen brachte mich ein Taxi zum Flughafen und von dort ging es weiter nach Ho Chi Minh. Dinge, die ich noch gerne auf Phu Quoq gemacht hätte, wären die Sea Stars im Norden gewesen. Am besten geht man dort hin wenn Ebbe ist, also vorher recherchieren. Sie sollen wirklich toll aussehen!
