Kolkata is a vibrant, noisy, colorful, incredible city and the people who live in it make it special. It was my second time in India, but I quickly felt that the people of Kolkata are one of a kind. The people encountered me openly and cordially and so I felt comfortable really fast. After about a week of getting used to it, I became more familiar with the surroundings, I knew where to go shopping and how to get to work (read here what I did there http://restlessea.com/newlight/ ). In the beginning it was like my previous trip to India, quite difficult. There are so many people, a traffic chaos, it’s loud, hot and I felt a little lost. But feeling lost doesn’t always mean something bad, you grow, become stronger and you learn to find your own way. From my first visit to India I also knew that it would be over after about a week.
Kolkata ist eine pulsierende, laute, bunte, unglaubliche Stadt und die Menschen die in ihr leben, machen sie ganz besonders. Für mich war es das zweite Mal in Indien, aber ich hatte schnell das Gefühl, dass die Menschen in Kolkata etwas besonderes sind. Die Menschen begegneten mir offen und herzlich und so habe ich mich schnell sehr wohl gefühlt. Nach ca. einer Woche Eingewöhnungszeit wurde mir die Umgebung vertrauter, ich wusste wo ich einkaufen gehen konnte und wie ich zur Arbeit kam (was ich dort gemacht habe findet ihr hier http://restlessea.com/newlight/). Am Anfang war es wie bei meiner vorherigen Reise nach Indien, ziemlich schwierig. Es sind viele Menschen, ein Verkehrschaos, es ist laut, heiß und ich fühlte mich etwas verloren. Aber sich verloren fühlen heißt nicht immer etwas schlechtes. Man wächst, wird stärker und findet seinen eigenen Weg. Aber von meinem ersten Aufenthalt in Indien wusste ich auch, dass es nach ca. einer Woche vorbei sein würde.
Those who come to India will quickly experience that the everyday life can take place on the streets. This means sleeping, cooking, washing and much more. That may seem strange to some people or even embarrassing. But one has to understand that due the high population density, privacy in India has a completely different meaning. If you decide to do a power nap in the middle of the sidewalk, people won’t look stupidly at you, that’s just part of it.
Wer nach Indien kommt der wird schnell erleben, dass das alltägliche Leben auf den Straßen stattfinden kann. Das bedeutet, es wird dort geschlafen, gekocht, gewaschen und noch einiges mehr. Das mag für einige seltsam erscheinen oder gar befremdlich wirken. Man muss aber verstehen, dass aufgrund der hohen Bevölkerungsdichte Privatsphäre in Indien eine völlig andere Bedeutung hat. Wenn man sich entscheidet, mitten auf dem Bürgersteig einen Powernap zu machen, dann wird man nicht blöd angeschaut, das gehört einfach dazu.

When I’m in India, I prefer to wear traditional clothes. Of course, I have a nice sari, but for me personally a sari is way too warm to wear it in India. I prefer to wear a salwar kameez, which is a garment that is divided into three different parts. The whole outfit consists of bloomers (salwar), a long top (kameez) and a scarf (dupatta). Clothes like these can be found in Kolkata, what do I say, everywhere in India. And that brings me to another important point: how should you dress? Well, your shoulders should be covered and your knees should be covered, too. It’s just not common for a woman AND a man to wear short clothes. So if you don’t want to attract the curious, shocked, irritated reactions of the people, please dress appropriately. And beautiful clothes can be found everywhere in India 😉
Wenn ich in Indien bin, dann trage ich am liebsten traditionelle Kleidung. Ich besitze natürlich einen schönen Sari, aber für mich persönlich ist ein Sari in Indien einfach zu heiß. Am liebsten trage ich einen Salwar Kameez, dabei handelt es sich um ein Kleidungsstück, welches in drei verschiedene Teile unterteilt ist. Das ganze Outfit besteht dann aus einer Pumphose (Salwar), einem langen Oberteil (Kameez) und einem Schal (Dupatta). Kleidung wie diese findet man in Kolkata, was sage ich, in ganz Indien überall. Und damit komme ich zu einem weiteren wichtigen Punkt: Wie sollte man sich anziehen? Nun, die Schultern sollten bedeckt sein und auch die Knie. Es ist einfach nicht üblich, dass eine Frau UND ein Mann kurze Kleidung tragen. Wer also nicht die neugierigen, entsetzten, irritierten Blicke der Menschen auf sich ziehen möchte, der möge sich doch bitte angemessen kleiden. Und schöne Kleidung, die gibt es in Indien überall 😉
Kolkata is also the place of the motherhouse of the missionary of charity, where Mother Teresa lived and and where is also the place of her tomb. In the district of Kalighat, there is as well a house for the sick and dying, Normal Hriday – home of the pure heart. A visit to the motherhouse is worth it in any case, you can visit the room in which Mother Teresa lived, worked and also died. Mother Teresa came to Kolkata shortly after leaving her native home Albania and started to help people.
Kolkata, das ist auch der Platz vom Mutterhaus der Missionarinnen der Nächstenliebe, dort wo Mutter Teresa gelebt hat und wo sich auch ihr Grab befindet. Es gibt außerdem ein Haus für die Kranken und Sterbenden, Normal Hriday – Home of the pure heart, in dem Viertel Kalighat. Ein Besuch in dem Motherhouse lohnt sich auf alle Fälle, dort kann man das Zimmer besichtigen, in dem Mutter Teresa gewohnt und gearbeitet hat, und in dem sie auch gestorben ist. Mutter Teresa ist kurz nachdem sie ihre Heimat Albanien verließ, nach Kolkata gekommen und fing dort an, den Menschen zu helfen.

Ein Besuch in dem Motherhouse lohnt sich auf alle Fälle, dort kann man das Zimmer besichtigen, in dem Mutter Teresa gewohnt und gearbeitet hat, und in dem sie auch gestorben ist.
On this picture you can see the beautiful Victoria Memorial. A beautiful building made of white marble. In the park in front of the Victoria Memorial you can sit down, picnic and relax. The VM was commissioned by Lord Curzon, at that time viceroy of India, to commemorate Queen Victoria.
Auf diesem Bild ist das schöne Victoria Memorial zu sehen. Ein wunderschönes Gebäude aus Mamor. Im Park vor dem Victoria Memorial kann man sich total entspannt hinsetzen, picknicken und entspannen. Das VM wurde von Lord Cursor, dem damaligen Vizekönig von Indien, in Auftrag gegeben, um an Königin Victoria zu erinnern.
This picture was taken at the flower market in Kolkata. It’s full and bustling, it smells wonderful and is definitely worth a visit. It is located at the southeast end of the Howrah Bridge. The flower market is busy almost 24 hours a day, but at daybreak you can see how the wholesale sellers auction their goods to retailers.
Dieses Bild ist auf dem Flowermarkt in Kolkata entstanden. Dort ist es voll, hektisch, es riecht wunderbar und ist definitiv einen Ausflug wert. Er findet sich am südöstlichen Ende der Howrah Brücke. Der Blumenmarkt ist quasi 24 Stunden am Tag belebt, bei Tagesanbruch kann man allerdings sehen, wie die Großverkäufer ihre Waren an die Einzelhändler versteigern.
Thali, my favorite meal in India. The food in Kolkata is great, since I did not write down the locations of my favorite restaurants I can just say go there where a lot of locals eat, it’s always the best!
